OJ A Good Place To Go!
Posted By John Barlow On May 5, 2010 @ 4:35 pm In Letters to the Editor in the May 5th edition of the Western Wheel
Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
My daughter started attending Okotoks Junior High School this fall. I am impressed with what I have seen and heard about in the past eight months and am happy to spread the word about some of the positive things that go on there.
Principal Bryan Brandford is a presence. I have seen him outside welcoming and high-fiving kids in through the front doors in the morning, and before other special school activities as well. From the teenagers I talk to regularly, I hear about him and his staff consistently enforcing the rules, despite not always being popular for it. (No cell phones or texting, no inappropriate clothing etc.) He interacts with the kids in the halls and in their classes. When it was not possible to start a new sports team at school, he sought out information directing my child and a few girls to a local team outside of school, seizing the opportunity for encouragement.
When my daughter was in the process of being diagnosed with a medical issue, vice-principal Bill Holmes was immediately responsive and assured me that there were many different modifications that could be made to accommodate her within the school if need be. Thankfully, there was no need.
Teachers have all been organized, communicative and flexible. (Thanks Mrs. Hutton, for letting my kid switch to the trumpet in the middle of the year, you didn’t have to do that, and now you have a kid who likes to play an instrument instead of a band dropout).
I get daily emails with notifications/reminders of what is due for homework and what is coming up for all the core subjects and what is going on in school in general.
Both parent and student can access the teacher’s virtual mark books through the school website at anytime, so kids know when they need to step it up, and parents can be aware fairly quickly if any problems arise, such as if an assignment hasn’t been handed in. There are no surprises at report card time. Assignments given have been creative and humorous with latitude for the kid’s personalities and talents to shine through.
From what I have read in the newsletter, if extra help is needed for any subject, there is a teacher there at the “Homework Hub” everyday after school. Some teachers are available right before tests for extra help as well if there are any last minute misunderstandings.
There is more that I could say, but I will just say this: if your child is headed to this school sometime soon, know that the teachers and staff are doing a good job, despite renovation challenges. The kids are fortunate.
